PHC's Relationship with UBC Research
PHC is required to conduct all activities including research in full accordance with the terms of the Affiliation Agreement between UBC and PHC. Any project carried out by a person connected with UBC and affiliated hospitals must conform with the university policies concerning research. Therefore, PHC's research policies and procedures are fully consistent with those of UBC. PHC's Research Services office works closely with UBC's research infrastructure in particular with the University-Industry Liaison Office (UILO).

The University-Industry Liaison Office
The University-Industry Liaison Office (UILO) at UBC provides support to researchers whose dedicated efforts contribute to the future of society. The UILO:
- Facilitates collaborative research
- Assesses technology
- Protects intellectual property
- Licenses technology
- Assists in prototype development
- Creates spin-off companies
- Provides educational programs
The UILO has two offices for the convenience of UBC researchers. One office is located on the Point Grey campus and the other is located at Vancouver General Hospital. The UILO serves all UBC faculty working out of its five Affiliated Hospital sites including Providence Health Care. UILO operations are dictated by both The University of British Columbia and Hospital Institution policies on research and technology transfer.
The UILO is organized into two teams: the Sponsored Research group and the Technology Transfer group. The Sponsored Research group negotiates the industry and government research activities such as industrial grant-in-aid funding, collaborative research agreements, service agreements, government contracts, and some of the investigator initiated clinical trial agreements. The Technology Transfer group assesses invention disclosures that evolve from funded research for patentability and marketability, and protects inventions by means of patents or other forms of intellectual property protection. This group then develops, markets, and licenses the resulting technology to companies for commercialization. These companies include established companies or new spin-off companies created around the technology.
