Research Overview
  PRESIDENT + CEO’S MESSAGE

At Providence Health Care we have a strong legacy of individuals who are dedicated to finding new ways of responding to individual and community health care needs.

It began with the founding congregations of Sisters whose legacy of caring and providing hope to the sick, the poor and the disadvantaged have long been our inspiration. It continues today with cutting-edge research at what is now one of British Columbia’s leading research and teaching health-care organizations.

Research is a Providence priority because of the profound impact it can have on the quality of individual lives and improvements in the health care system. This commitment was strengthened in 2005 with the establishment of the Providence Health Care Research Institute. Comprised of world-class researchers, clinicians and care professionals, the Institute’s activities are intertwined with PHC’s clinical programs. This integrated and strategic approach creates a unique environment that enables an interprofessional approach to research.

The Providence Health Care Research Institute includes five major groups:

  • iCAPTURE, which uses the best available technology to understand the link between our genes and environments in causing heart, lung and blood vessel diseases.
  • The Centre for Healthy Aging at Providence (CHAP), whose mandate is to improve the health outcomes of seniors and meet the needs of an aging population.
  • The Centre for Health Evaluation and Outcome Sciences (CHÉOS), which, with its focus on urban health research, embodies the Research Institute’s commitment to pursuing real-life health solutions and PHC’s mission to serve society’s marginalized populations.
  • The BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS, which is committed to research and treatment as well as the study of how the epidemic impacts British Columbians. Thanks to the results of this research, British Columbians with HIV now live longer and healthier lives.
  • Providence Health Care’s Clinical Research Program, which is home to several large clinical research groups that specialize in kidney, interventional cardiology and other areas.

Together, these teams share a spirit of discovery and a drive to improve the lives of the sick that mirrors that of our founding Sisters. The Providence Health Care Research Institute continues their proud legacy with commitment, dedication, innovation and passion.
