Therapeutic Plasma Exchange

Therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE), also known as plasmapheresis, is a process used in the treatment of TTP, SLE, Guillain-Barré syndrome, Wegener's and other conditions that can cause high amounts of immunoglobulin to accumulate in the body. In a process that takes about 2 hours, the blood is drawn and channeled through a machine separating and removing the plasma from the rest of the components and replaced with a plasma substitute. TPE is done by specially trained hemodialysis staff in the SPH hemodialysis unit.
