Surgery
From nurses and physicians to physiotherapists, occupational therapists and social workers, the surgery program includes teams who care for patients' pre- and post- surgery (with the exception of Cardiac and Renal patients, whose care falls under the Heart and Renal programs). PHC provides surgical services at two sites (Mount Saint Joseph and St. Paul's) to meet the needs of the local and regional populations. Services at Mount Saint Joseph are general surgery, geriatric dentistry, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, plastic surgery and urology. Services at St. Paul's are general surgery, gynecology, otolaryngology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, thoracic surgery, urology and vascular surgery.
The program is also a provincial referral centre for specialty surgical services, including:
- Cardiac — open heart surgery, internal defibrillators and heart transplantation
- General Surgery — colorectal surgery and endocrine surgery
- Ophthalmology — retinal surgery and corneal transplantation
- Orthopedics — foot and ankle surgery
- Otolaryngology — sinonasal surgery and implantable hearing devices (cochlear implants)
- Plastic Surgery — breast reconstruction
- Urology — kidney transplantation
Integrated Medicine/Surgery
While many patients who receive care at our facilities come for either medical or surgical procedures, those requiring respiratory and gastro-intestinal (GI) care often require both. The Integrated Medicine/Surgery program ensures there is continuity between the medical and surgical interventions patients receive.
