Palliative Care / End of Life
St. Paul's Hospital offers compassionate care for people living with a terminal illness, when the goal of a cure no longer applies. The emphasis of palliative care is on the comfort and quality of remaining life. The patient and family are treated as a unit of care and are therefore involved in the discussions regarding their care. The concept of family is broad and includes relatives and/or loved ones.
On the Palliative Care Unit, care is provided to patients and families by a team who can assist with physical, emotional, social and spiritual needs. While the unit is housed in an acute care setting, it has a relaxed, homelike environment.
Palliative Care Consult Teams respond to referrals from all other clinical programs and patient care units at St. Paul's Hospital. These teams also provide palliative care expertise and support for the care of patients at Mount Saint Joseph Hospital. This service is expected to expand into residential care facilities. Education and training is a central focus, with the aim of expanding the collective capacity to deliver quality end-of-life care to all patients and residents across Providence Health Care.
