Residential Services

Five Providence Health Care facilities are home to 700 residents who require a broad range of medical and personal assistance to cope with the activities of daily living. Each resident is valued as a unique person who deserves support to enjoy a meaningful quality of life. Our residents — as well as our staff, physicians and volunteers — come from a variety of cultures and walks of life.

Providence Health Care has adopted the Eden Alternative as the guiding philosophy in our residential care settings. Eden is a commitment to improving the social and physical milieu of our elders. This philosophy provides guidance on how we can help elders continue living meaningful lives when they become too frail to live independently.

To help families and friends make their visits more meaningful, we have provided some tips in the form of a Visiting Handbook, which is available in English and Chinese.

In the coming years, Providence plans to revitalize its elder care program, creating a broad range of services, such as:
  • independent living;
  • complex residential care;
  • rehabilitative services;
  • palliative care; and
  • special outpatient clinics.

In the coming years the former St. Vincent's Hospital Heather will be redeveloped into a Campus of Care for seniors.

This Campus of Care will enable people to "age in place," rather than have to move as their care needs increase. Each person's physical, emotional and spiritual needs will be supported through the Eden philosophy adopted by Providence. This involves a holistic-care focus that reduces the loneliness, helplessness and boredom facing many seniors.
