The Diabetes Teaching and Treatment Centre at St. Paul's Hospital is the busiest treatment and training centre of its kind in Canada. The centre offers a variety of programs designed to:
  • Provide basic knowledge and understanding of diabetes
  • Teach skills in self-care and home management
  • Inform family members about diabetes so they may help in the management and support of those with diabetes mellitus
Programs are offered for patients recently diagnosed with diabetes and for those who speak Cantonese. The centre also has a gestational program for those women diagnosed with diabetes during pregnancy. The Diabetes Centre is managed by a multidisciplinary team of physicians, nurses, dieticians, clerical staff, dining room staff and a social work liaison. Most patients are first seen by an endocrinologist at the Diabetes Mellitus Assessment Clinic.
