The Pharmacy Department at Providence Health Care provides advanced clinical services, prepared intravenous medications for the majority of patients for all common medications, specialty products, chemotherapy, and a comprehensive medication system focusing on patient safety. Our pharmacy technicians are responsible for order entry, inventory control and product checking, which allows the pharmacists more time to provide direct pharmaceutical care and patient counseling. The medication distribution system utilizes the skills and abilities of the pharmacy technicians to the maximum for medication order entry and drug preparation.
Our Pharmacy utilizes medication profiles using the GE RxTFC, which is a top-of-the-line computer software allowing identification of potential drugrelated problems for our patients. We also provide our pharmacists with a personal digital assist device that is equipped with databases containing
information about medication and diseases to use in patient-care activities.

Where We Are Located
The Pharmacy services patients across all sites of PHC. Residential facilities (Langara and Holy Family Hospital) have Pharmacy staff working from Holy Family Hospital. Acute inpatients at Mount Saint Joseph and St. Paul’s Hospitals have pharmacists and technicians working onsite to meet patients’ pharmaceutical needs.
Education
A majority of our pharmacists have completed a hospital Pharmacy Residency Program or have equivalent experience. Clinical pharmacy specialists with advanced training (Doctor of Pharmacy) serve patients with special drug therapy needs within our hospitals. We also participate in Vancouver Coastal Health Authority’s Pharmacy Residency Training Program. The hospitals train a large number of undergraduate pharmacists and pharmacy technicians in aspects related to real life provision of care. Pharmacy technicians are required to have completed a recognized Pharmacy Technician Training Program.
Interdisciplinary Teams
The Pharmacy staff is a dynamic, enthusiastic group of caregivers who strive to provide the best for their patients and draw the most from their internal strengths and abilities. At Providence Health this results in pharmacists, technicians, and support staff working directly with each other in all aspects of patient care. Our team also worksdirectly with other professionals across the organization.
